First chance for Harry Kane

By Dean Bilton

10′: England 0-0 USA

Best moment of the match so far.

Bellingham and Saka combined up the right, and the latter’s cutback found Kane coming onto the ball on the penalty spot. For a hot second his shot seemed goal bound, but a crucial block sees it behind for a corner.

The US eventually clear their lines.

So the early patterns have been set. England are trying to control the ball and are being patient building up from the back. The US are happy enough to allow that, but are snapping in relentlessly once the ball finds its way to midfield.

Still feeling each other out a bit.

This one has been circled since the groups were announced. Can England avenge that famous and disappointing draw of 2010? Or will the USA put a spanner in the Three Lions’ works again?

The lineups are in for England-USA

By Dean Bilton

No changes for Gareth Southgate and England from the team that belted Iran the other day. The Rice-Bellingham-Mount midfield gets another run out, and Bukayo Saka keeps his well-earned place in the starting XI.

Only one change for the USMNT, with Haji Wright coming in to lead the line in place of Josh Sargent. The US will likely be looking to play without the ball in this one, so the taller Wright comes in as a focal point to launch those counter-attacks around.

Key Event

Qatar’s defeat to Senegal and the Netherlands-Ecuador draw mean the host nation is the first team officially unable to qualify for the second round of the 2022 World Cup.

As mentioned, it’s also the first time in World Cup history the host nation has been eliminated after just two games.

The results so far today

Wales 0-2 Iran

  • A messy, frustrating game came to glorious life in the final throes of injury time when a Rouzbeh Chehsmi cracker and Ramin Rezaelen counter-attack gave Iran a famous win over the 10 men of Wales.

Qatar 1-3 Senegal

  • A largely comfortable evening for Senegal, who took the lead through Boulaye Dia just before half-time and never looked back. Mohammed Montari scored for the host nation, but it counted for little as Qatar became the first tournament hosts in World Cup history to be eliminated after two games.

Netherlands 1-1 Ecuador

  • Two familiar names on the scoresheet in this one, with Cody Gakpo’s opener cancelled out by Enner Valencia’s equaliser. It leaves Group A neatly poised, with the Netherlands needing a result against Qatar to go through while Senegal and Ecuador play off for the other spot.
